Mary Rozella Baker, 91, died on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, in Albuquerque, N.M. She was born on July 30, 1935, in Woodbine, to parents Elton and Alma (Brewster) Baker. Rozella graduated from Woodbine High School in 1952. She then attended Graceland College for two years. She began teaching kindergarten in Whiting then moved to Marcus and taught elementary school there until retiring in 1999. While teaching she took night classes and summer school at Dana College to finish getting her teacher’s certificate. Rozella moved back to Woodbine in 2001.
Rozella was a member of the Community of Christ in Woodbine and of the American Legion Auxiliary. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching the younger elementary students. Rozella like helping out kids and adults.
Rozella was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles Baker and Dwight Baker; sister, Maxine Newell; two nieces, Janet Newell and Kathy Heacock and nephew, Keith Baker. She is survived by nephews, Dwight (Carolyn) Newell of Albuquerque, N.M. and Kevin Baker of Indiana; great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, at the Community of Christ Church in Woodbine. Noel Sherer and Curtis Lee officiated the service. Kathy Waite was the musician. The musical selections included “Old, Old Path”, “How Great Thou Art”, and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”. The pallbearers included Rozella’s great-nieces and nephews. Rozella’s final resting place is at the Woodbine Cemetery.
