The Kiwanis Club of Woodbine officially bestowed the recognition of “50-Year Legion of Honor Member” to Phil Lubbers last month.

Lubbers, a continuous 50-year Kiwanis member, traces his membership all the way back to 1974 when he joined the Kiwanis Club of Sac City, Iowa.

An elementary principal at the time, Lubbers was involved in many kids' activities and was in charge of Kids Day at the county fair. In 1982, he and family made the move to Woodbine and Lubbers was sure to transfer his membership, as well. He has been a Woodbine Kiwanis member ever since.

Lubbers has worked at many Kiwanis fundraising activities, including their pancake breakfast, which is the main fundraiser of the Woodbine Kiwanis Club. Over the years, he has enjoyed being a part of sponsored youth activities. He has also served as president for several years, and has lived up to the Kiwanis ideal of community service through Young Children Priority One.

The father of three grown daughters: Michell Kenkel of Storm Lake, Iowa; Maureen Anderson of Kearney, Missouri; and Melanie Pryor of Woodbine, Iowa, Lubbers also enjoys following all of the activities of his 10 grandchildren.

Officially becoming a Kiwanis member on Aug. 7, 1974, Lubbers has reached the membership milestone of being a 50-year Legion of Honor Kiwanis Member.
