Woodbine’s Legion replaces Veterans Markers at cemetery
This summer the Woodbine American Legion Weiss Post #143 announced a veteran grave marker renovation project at the Woodbine cemetery. The Woodbine cemetery currently has over 500 veteran graves dating back to the War of 1812 to include over 50 civil war veterans, and hundreds of veterans from every military conflict since.
“As we placed flags out for Memorial Day this year, it became apparent to us that there were many veteran graves that had broken or missing grave markers,” said Steve Harrington, Commander of the American Legion Post 143. “We felt something had to be done, because every veteran deserves recognition. This is important not only for the veterans, but their families.”
It was concluded that about 200 new gravesite markers were needed to replace the existing broken, missing, and deteriorated veteran markers. After announcing the project, with the support of the community, the American Legion Post 143 were able to get the material needed to update the cemetery’s veteran gravesite markers. The process to replace and update the markers started late fall, and they plan to finish the project early next spring, depending on the fall weather.
“We appreciate the support from the community for this special veteran cemetery project. As we recognize our veterans in life, we should also recognize their service in death,” said Harrington. “To showcase the veteran gravesite renovations, we will keep the gravesite marker flags, placed on Memorial Day, in the cemetery through July 4th in recognition of our country’s 250th anniversary.”
