The Harrison County Commissioners briefly discussed getting microphones for county meetings. This would make it easier to hear what’s going on, because sometimes, the air conditioning system makes it difficult to hear conversation.

Chief Deputy Mitch Flaherty from the county Sheriff’s Office provided an example of what could be installed when he addressed county commissioners June 25. A system could be installed for about $475.

The money could possibly come from grants, he said.

  • The county voted to forgive about $7,800 in outstanding warrants.
  • The county voted to give a stipend of $30 a month for the cell phone belonging to Michael Dorland, who works in the IT office. Phone calls to Dorland get routed to his cell phone when he’s out of the office.

“He’s a one-man show, and will get a lots of phone calls,” said county commissioner Tony Smith.

The vote was 2-1, with Wilkerson abstaining. She did not provide a reason to abstain.

  • The county voted to place notice of meetings on the community bulletin board by the west entrance of the county court house. The west entrance is never locked, so this fits the state requirement that the notice must be visible at all times for the 24 hours prior to any meeting.

  • The county voted look at insurance costs for next year, Wilkerson noted that the county has gone with the same carrier for years, never looking to see if it could get a better deal by shopping around.
