“It’s a good idea to read the instructions!” Dave Smith said as each child picked up a hammers and a birdhouse kit. “We’re gonna start playing with hammers and nails here.”

About 30 children and parents came to the Missouri Valley Public Library on July 14 to build birdhouses.

The Missouri Valley Library held the event where children came out for a morning craft. The downstairs held 10 youngsters working to build, while upstairs in the children’s section, five younger children painted birdhouses.

Smith, husband of librarian Maura Smith, led the session. Smith has long been a “jack of all trades” at the library, helping out and building shelves as needed.

Smith, a retired lieutenant colonel, modified each of the birdhouse kits, drilling extra holes to make the job easier for the young carpenters.

In moments, the children set to work. Maura Smith was glad to see all the excitement with the children being active.

“I think it’s great that young people are coming in and using the library, and families are excited to bring their kids in. So that’s great,” she said.

The library holds children’s programs at least once a week during the summer, Maura Smith said.
