ROGER MARSHALL
CITY/TOWN: Missouri Valley
CANDIDATE FOR: Mayor
EXPLAIN WHO YOU ARE: My Name is Roger Marshall and I am a lifelong resident of Missouri Valley. My wife, Julie, and I raised and educated 4 kids here. I worked in the area my whole career starting at the local furniture store until I began my career with the Iowa Department of Transportation, where I worked for 35 years until my retirement in 2019.
WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THIS POSITION? I feel my experience and knowledge can benefit the city by leading our city government on a path forward with common sense solutions to our infrastructure problems and also improve our business district and address our housing shortage.
WHAT FROM YOUR BACKGROUND QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION? I served 10 years on the Missouri Valley city council, in those years of service I learned a great deal about municipal rules and regulations and how a city should be run. In my 35 years with the Iowa D.O.T., I learned all aspects of road and bridge construction, repair, and maintenance. I was a certified grade A water distribution operator and a class 1 waste water operator. I feel this knowledge and experience will help me understand infrastructure issues and work with our engineers in planning upcoming projects. Julie and I owned and operated our own small business for 6 years so I understand the obstacles facing small business owners. I am also a member of the Missouri Valley Steering Committee working to establish a comprehensive plan for the future of our city.
WHAT ARE YOU GOALS IF ELECTED? My goals are to improve the downtown business district and our aging infrastructure as well as address the housing market. These are obvious concerns and if there was an easy solution it would have been done by now. But I will work to find ways to accomplish these goals, with the help of the City Council and the Chamber of Commerce as well as the Missouri Valley Development Corporation and the Harrison County Development Corporation to search for improvement grants to address these issues. We may have to look at expanding our city limits by partnering with local contractors and landowners to develop housing projects which will in turn increase our tax base or I feel we will remain stagnant.
