Jeremy Poore

CITY/TOWN: Woodbine

CANDIDATE FOR: Woodbine City Council

EXPLAIN WHO YOU ARE: I'm Jeremy Poore, I grew up just outside of Woodbine, and I graduated from WHS in 1992. My wife, Angel, and I spent 17 years in Avoca.  When my parents’ house became available in the fall of 2021, we jumped at the chance to move back to Woodbine.

Earlier this year, I stepped up to fill a vacant seat on the City Council. Now, I am officially running to be an elected City Council member and continue the work of serving the citizens of Woodbine.

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THIS POSITION? I'll be the first to admit I wasn't the perfect kid growing up and I struggled, but I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Woodbine. Woodbine and its people helped shape me into the man I am today, and I'm so thankful they’ve welcomed us back home. To be honest, running for City Council was never on my radar. But when I first moved back I found myself with a few concerns. I decided it was time to stop complaining and remembered the advice a wise person once gave me: Don't just bring problems; bring solutions. I realized the only honest way to make a difference was to step off the sidelines and into the process with that goal in mind.

WHAT FROM YOUR BACKGROUND QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS POSITION? I've been working in the IT field for 26 years, serving for the last 16 as the Network Administrator for Harlan Community Schools. In that job, I manage and secure the school's technology, keeping the systems reliable and safe while also maximizing our uptime. I’m also responsible for managing our technology budget and making sure every dollar is spent wisely to keep us current in a rapidly changing technological and educational environment.

Most importantly, my entire career has been focused on one thing: problem-solving. Some issues are easy, others are tough, and solving them is always in my job description. But here’s the key: I've learned that even the toughest problems are usually fixed not with complicated knowledge, but with simple common sense.

Because of this background and my experience with budgeting and problem-solving in the public sector, I believe I bring a skillset needed to tackle the challenges facing Woodbine today and in the future.

WHAT ARE YOU GOALS IF ELECTED? My goals are simple and based on common sense.

We need to fix the problems we see every day, starting with our town's basic maintenance: repairing our streets and replacing the old infrastructure before it fails. We also need to look at our existing ordinances—if they're outdated, we need to simplify or possibly get rid of some of them altogether.

But we have to do all of this without pricing people out of Woodbine. We cannot raise taxes so high that young families can’t afford to raise their families here, or our retired neighbors can’t afford to stay. That's why we need to work together as a City Council to develop a long-term plan—a real blueprint for the future. My number one goal is to keep Woodbine a town we can all continue to take pride in today and for years to come.  Thank you for this great opportunity!
