Looking at 2025 Harrison County Christmas Adoption Program changes

For the Harrison County Times-Reporter
A familiar Harrison County holiday event is in full swing — even if there have been a few changes in leadership during the past two years.
Lori Cohrs from Logan United Methodist Church recently took the time to tell the Harrison County Times-Reporter what’s changed and what’s stayed the same with the community’s Christmas Adoption Program.
Previously run by West Central Development – out of the Logan West Central Community Action office — the program is now under the leadership of Logan United Methodist Church.
The Christmas Adoption Program is the same program it has been for 40 years, serving the community in the same way, just by different leadership, Cohrs said.
But after the leadership changes, the program needs community support to help find the right people locally who can be uplifted by the adoption program during the holidays.
Cohrs said she’s already contacted the schools, posted on social media (their Facebook group is Harrison Co. Christmas Adoption Program-UMC), and placed applications at all county libraries, home health organizations and Logan City Hall.
Donations will be accepted to help with the cost of buying gift cards for any families not adopted by the deadline. Those can be sent directly to Logan State Bank or the program’s P.O. Box 12 in Logan.
The families chosen for adoption are already being listed in the Facebook group as they come in. Once adopted, a wishlist will be provided to those adopting. They ask that gifts are then brought to Logan City Hall on Dec. 9th — with wrapping paper, but not wrapped. This allows the parents to see what their children are getting before it’s wrapped.
Pickup day for the adopted families to get their gifts is Dec. 10th. Cohrs said this day tends to be emotional for all involved. It’s a special day to see the community come together and touch the lives of the less fortunate right before Christmas.
If you, or someone you know, would be a good fit for the program (Medicaid recipients, disability recipients, veterans, those on utility assistance and SNAP, etc...), you may reach out to Cohrs at (712) 592-2167 or email her at loganumc308@gmail.com.
