Garcia’s faith leads to Peru Mission Trip

Ava Garcia, daughter of Scott and Rachel Ortiz of Little Sioux, has begun an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Ava left on Jan. 14 and will serve in the Arequipa, Peru Mission, where she will share Christ’s love through teaching, community service projects, and individual acts of service. She will be serving in the Spanish language and is a member of the Logan Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Garcia, at the age of 19, is already accomplishing much through her dedication to faith, service, and leadership. She is a 2024 graduate of West Harrison High School, where she was actively involved in academics and student leadership.

Ava graduated as a member of the National Honor Society, served as class president, participated in cheerleading, and was involved in Future Christian Leaders of America. She also devoted significant time to community service, including volunteering with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace nonprofit, helping build and deliver beds to children and families in need.

Before beginning her mission, Ava completed a semester at Brigham Young University (Idaho in Rexburg). She plans to continue her studies in the healthcare field upon returning home.

Ava also participated in the Junior EMS program with the Mondamin Fire Department, following in her father’s footsteps of public service. She is the eldest daughter in her family and the fourth of eight children.

Ava is the second child in her family to serve a mission for the Church. Her brother, Jacob Garcia, previously served a two-year service mission in the Pocatello, Idaho area, concluding his service two years ago.

Proud of her small-town upbringing, Ava looks forward to seeing how her experiences in Peru will broaden her worldview. Her family and the Little Sioux community wish her safety, growth, and success as she serves the people of Peru.
