Flu season has arrived and, CHI Health Missouri Valley is reminding the public about the critical importance of getting an annual flu vaccine to protect themselves and our community. Every year, influenza poses a significant public health threat, leading to serious illness, hospitalizations, and even death.
According to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services the first flu influenza related death of the 2025-26 season occurred in November of 2025. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed an upward trend of 32.9% of positive flu cases the last full week in December, with Iowa falling in the “high” category for the United States.
These are all reasons why CHI Health Missouri Valley is recommending the public consider receiving their flu shot.
“Getting your annual flu shot is the single best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu,” CHI Health Clinic Supervisor Amanda Lary, RN, said. “The flu is more than just a bad cold; it can lead to severe complications, especially for vulnerable populations like young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. By getting vaccinated, you're not only protecting yourself but also helping to build community immunity and reduce the spread of the virus.”
Why Vaccinate? The Facts You Need to Know:
Effective Protection: The flu vaccine is designed to protect against the most common flu viruses anticipated for the upcoming season. While it doesn’t guarantee you won’t get the flu, it significantly reduces your chances of becoming sick. Studies show that vaccination can reduce the risk of needing to visit a doctor for the flu by 40 to 60% when vaccine viruses are similar to circulating strains.
Reduced Severity: Even if you do get the flu after vaccination, studies have shown that the flu shot can make your illness less severe. This means a reduced risk of hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and even death from flu complications.
Community Health: When more people are vaccinated, it creates an “immunity” effect, protecting those who cannot be vaccinated, such as infants or individuals with certain medical conditions.
Convenient & Accessible: The flu vaccine is widely available and typically covered by most health insurance plans at no cost. You can get your flu shot at CHI Health Missouri Valley through our Employee Health services for our team, many local retail pharmacies (like Walgreens and CVS), and from your healthcare provider.
Important Considerations for Your Flu Shot:
Timing is Key: While it’s never truly too late, the best time to get your flu shot is typically in late September or early October. As this time period has past, now is the best time as the usual flu season can last until May.
One Dose is Enough (for most): The CDC recommends one flu vaccine per person per season. The only exception is for young children receiving their very first flu vaccine, who often require two doses.
Consult Your Doctor About Allergies: If you have a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccines or other compounds, please discuss this with your doctor before vaccination. The majority of side effects from the flu shot are mild and short- lived, such as soreness at the injection site.
When to Postpone: If you are currently feeling unwell, especially with a fever or respiratory symptoms, it’s best to wait until you recover before getting vaccinated. People with minor illnesses, like a common cold, can generally still receive the vaccine.
