Does Harrison County / Hwy 30 need another Dollar General ?
Did you know there is an effort to build a dollar store on the outskirts of Logan? This would make the 4th dollar store in Harrison County with a population of 14,000 - and two of the existing stores are within eight miles of Logan.
Did you also know that, statistically, dollar stores significantly hurt independent and local grocery stores, particularly in rural areas, by driving down sales by up to 30%, reducing employment, and increasing the likelihood of closures? These chains often create "food deserts" by replacing full-service grocers with limited options for fresh, nutritious food.
The Harrison County Planning and Zoning Committee will be voting on this decision at their Thursday, March 19th meeting at 9 a.m. at the Harrison County Courthouse. If approved, it will be presented to the Board of Supervisors at their 10 a.m. meeting on the same day.
It's time to educate ourselves on dollar stores. This isn't about them existing, this is about Logan not needing one. We are not a food desert. We do not have a dead Main Street. We do not lack a pharmacy, a grocery store, a hardware store. Let dollar stores fill those gaps in other blighted rural areas.
And if any of us need something quick from a dollar store, we can drive a few miles to one in Woodbine or Missouri Valley.
Please let our appointed and elected officials know how you feel about this decision.
