DAR presents two community service awards
At the September 20th meeting of the Council Bluffs Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution, Community Service Awards were presented to Rhonda Hope of Avoca and to DAR member Cindy Pittz of Missouri Valley.
Rhonda, as a State Farm agent, had won a $5000 grant from State Farm. She had to submit 100 acts of good which she had completed and was chosen as one of the top 100 agents in the nation. She donated her prize money to the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Avoca.
Cindy hosted an Earth Day Celebration at their Sawmill Hollow Organic Farm for school
children. They had many fun and educational activities, such as hiking, kite making and flying, a frog jumping contest, digging in and studying Loess Hills soil and conservation and learning about raptor recovery. Aronia berries from the farm were used in lemonade for the students.
Karen Hansen, Chairman of the Community Service Awards, applied for and presented the certificates and pins to Rhonda and to Cindy.
Karen Hansen did a presentation on 5 nurses from Walnut who served in the Unit K mobile hospital in France during World War I and were awarded the French Cross by the government of France.
