Ryan Murphy has been named the latest recipient of the Dunlap Community Development Corporation’s “That’s How It’s Dun” Award, recognizing his extensive volunteer service and dedication to the community. The quarterly award honors individuals who go above and beyond in contributing their time and effort to improve Dunlap, often without seeking recognition.

Murphy has been a consistent presence in local youth activities and community initiatives. He serves on the Boyer Valley Youth Organization and has spent several years coaching youth sports, including tackle football, basketball and baseball.

In addition to coaching, Murphy organizes the community’s youth basketball league, coordinating schedules, refereeing games and frequently handling setup and cleanup duties.

“He lines up all the youth basketball games, referees most of them himself, and often takes care of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps things running,” DCDC representatives noted in announcing the award.

Murphy and his wife, Jodi, also volunteer their time supporting concessions at youth sporting events. The couple has two children, Nash, an eighth-grade student, and Ellie, a fifth-grade student.

Beyond athletics, Murphy volunteers his time at several community events, including the Fourth of July celebration, Art at the Park and the 4 County Fair. He also serves on the Dunlap City Council, a role he has held for three years.

“In my work with Ryan through City Council meetings, I’ve come to really value his thoughtful approach and steady leadership,” said Jill Schaben, executive director of the Dunlap Community Development Corporation. “Ryan is a tremendous council member who listens carefully, asks good questions and makes decisions with the best interest of the community in mind.”

Professionally, Murphy works as a loan support representative at United Bank of Iowa. Murphy said he values the sense of unity within the community.

“I really appreciate how a small town can come together and support each other,”

Murphy said. “It is really impressive to see how far things have come in the last 20-plus years.”

He added that his volunteer efforts are driven by a desire to set a positive example for younger generations.

“I really think it is important to contribute to all of these things because it sets a great example for the youth to be involved and active in the community,” he said.

Murphy also encouraged others to get involved.

“Small towns seem to thrive on volunteers,” he said. “The more that we all help, the better off we will all be.”

DCDC officials said Murphy exemplifies the spirit of the “That’s How It’s Dun” Award through his ongoing commitment to service and his impact on youth and community life in Dunlap.
